Anesco’s Breach Farm has become the first battery storage site to supply electricity to National Grid’s Balancing Mechanism.
The 10MW battery storage site in Derbyshire has participated in the scheme as part of a virtual power plant, managed by aggregator Limejump.
Anesco will now be able to take advantage of additional revenue streams and pricing opportunities, as well as providing its investors with even more certainty.
It also hopes the news will encourage more adoption of stand-alone energy storage as well as hybrid solar and storage technologies.
Anesco’s Clayhill solar farm is also participating in the Balancing Mechanism – the site was the first subsidy-free installation of its type in the UK and features 6MW of energy storage and 10MW of solar generation.
Steve Shine, Executive Chairman at Anesco, said: “By entering our storage assets into the Balancing Mechanism, the door has been opened to additional revenue streams for investors and further validates the opportunity that battery storage provides.”
“It’s a major step forward for the industry, with the Balancing Mechanism market offering frequent instances of profitable spreads for batteries to take advantage of. In addition, it removes much of the risk that suppliers face from uncertain system prices.”
