Solar power is the most popular community energy project to invest in.
Around 28% of more than 1,500 people prefer to co-own this type of energy, a survey from the British Academy revealed.
It asked people to choose a type of renewable energy project they would be more interested in investing in or co-owning.
Solar was also the best choice for people between 18 and 24 years, according to the ‘YouGov’ survey.
The most popular option amongst people over 60 was energy from waste – 24%.
Geothermal projects were the least popular with only 4%.
Asked why they might want to invest in a community energy project, around 47% said to reduce the cost of their household bills followed by a 23% who said a high financial return on investment from an energy project could be a possibility.
Only 6% of those surveyed said their main reason would be to allow them to be more involved in their local community.
