The construction of a floating solar power plant with a capacity of 13.7MW has begun in Japan.

Japanese technology company Kyocera claims it will be the largest of its kind in the world.

It will consist of 51,000 solar panels installed in an area of 180,000 square meters.

The project is expected to generate 16,170MWh – enough electricity to power more than 4,900 homes.

It will also save more than 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

The floating solar power plant is scheduled to start operating in 2018.
